Why is Wildwood Beach so long?
The answer to this question goes all the way back to 1911, when the nearby town of Cape May finished digging its harbor. While it has been beneficial in many ways, it has also created an erosion issue. Trapping sand from the north side of this harbor, combined with the natural tide cycles and erosion from barrier islands, Avalon and Stone Harbor, a lot of sand gets pushed to the Wildwoods area. Thus creating, some say, the most expansive beach in the world.
In some sections, the beach spans nearly 500 feet wide. Not only is the beach quite wide, but it is also long, reaching five miles in length. And people love all of this extra room to play! It allows for some of the biggest and best beach festivals on the East Coast, and it’s pretty easy to find a spot to rest and relax with all that room.
